It was a difficult night on the road for the Sheffield Steeldogs as they fell to a heavy defeat against the Bristol Pitbulls.
The home side struck early and never looked back in a blistering opening period. Just 29 seconds into the game, Bayley Harewood gave Bristol the lead, finishing from John Dunbar and Jake Bricknell.
The pressure continued at 4:22 when Mason Lipsey doubled the advantage, assisted by Joshua Poole and Josh Batch. Bricknell then began to take control of the game offensively, scoring at 8:30 from Tanner Butler and Dunbar to make it 3–0.
Bristol extended their lead further at 17:05, with Bricknell grabbing his second of the night, again assisted by Dunbar and Butler, sending the Steeldogs into the first intermission trailing heavily.
The second period did little to shift momentum. After Liam Steele was penalised for tripping at 21:08, Bristol struck again at 24:28 through Caly Robertson, assisted by Cameron Hamill, stretching the deficit further.
A penalty for tripping against Jacob Bryceland at 29:35 handed Sheffield a power-play opportunity, and CJ Garcia capitalised at 29:50 with a well-taken finish from Walker Sommer and Joonas Larinmaa. Garcia added his second of the night at 31:19, combining with Bair Gendunov and Kyle Watson to offer a brief spark of hope.
At 37:25 there was a crash in front of the Steeldogs net which saw Alex Oldale leave the game. Tim Lyons replaced Alex for the remainder of the game.
A slashing penalty against Tanner Butler at 38:23 gave the Steeldogs another opportunity late in the period, and they continued to press.
Early in the third period, Bair Gendunov pulled another goal back at 40:30, assisted by Kyle Watson, reducing the deficit further. However, Bristol responded at 41:16 through Bricknell, who completed his hat-trick with help from Dunbar and Butler to halt Sheffield’s momentum.
A slashing penalty against Bricknell at 49:32 presented another chance for the Steeldogs, but time was running out.
Sheffield pushed hard in the closing stages, using their timeout at 57:38 to mount one final effort. The pressure eventually paid off when Gendunov struck at 58:16 from Sommer and Joonas Larinmaa. He added another at 59:58, assisted by Garcia and Sommer, but the late rally proved too little, too late.
Despite a spirited attempt to claw their way back in the final minutes, the damage had been done in a punishing first period, making it a very disappointing night on the road for the Steeldogs.
