Biography

American centre Walker Sommer arrives in Sheffield on a high after a standout 2024–25 season with the Steeldogs, where he led the NIHL in scoring with 100 points (56 goals, 44 assists) in 52 games.

Originally from Avon, Ohio, Sommer developed through the Cleveland Barons and Ohio Blue Jackets programs before making his mark in junior hockey with the New Jersey Hitmen, tallying 71 points across two USPHL Premier seasons.

He went on to play NCAA Division I hockey at the Air Force Academy and Niagara University, where he was a key part of the 2020 Atlantic Hockey (AHA) championship-winning squad. Known for his speed and scoring ability, he posted back-to-back 15-point seasons with Niagara before moving into the pro ranks in Germany’s third division, where he racked up 67 points over two seasons with HC Landsberg and EV Lindau.

Now 29, Sommer brings a mix of experience, finishing ability, and offensive creativity to the Steelers’ forward group.

GM Jamie McIlroy said:
“Walker had a massive year with the Steeldogs and has earned this opportunity. He’s a proven scorer with great instincts, and he brings energy and pace every night. We’re excited to see how his game translates at the next level, and we think he’ll surprise some people.”
