Sheffield Steeldogs secured a dramatic overtime victory against the Solway Sharks in a hard-fought and physical contest that finished 4–3 after overtime.
The Sharks made the perfect start to the game when #88 Kyle Carruth opened the scoring at 1:32, giving Solway an early advantage. Sheffield responded later in the first period and equalised at 17:45 through #3 Liam Steele, with assists from #37 Kyle Watson and #5 Brady Doxey, sending the teams into the first intermission tied at 1–1.
Sheffield took control early in the second period. At 20:37, #29 Nathan Ripley finished a play created by #91 Joonas Larinmaa and #11 Bair Gendunov to give the Steeldogs their first lead of the night. Solway answered back at 23:49 when #23 Jonathan Yantsis scored, assisted by #34 Jordan Buesa and #12 Kell Beattie, levelling the game again.
The Steeldogs then capitalised on their power-play opportunities. At 25:55, #91 Joonas Larinmaa restored Sheffield’s lead with a power-play goal assisted by #8 Walker Sommer and #96 CJ Garcia. Just a few minutes later at 29:59, #11 Bair Gendunov added another power-play goal, with CJ Garcia and Kyle Watson providing the assists, extending the Steeldogs’ advantage heading into the second intermission.
Solway began their comeback in the third period thanks to special teams. At 36:58, #5 Olivier Arseneau scored on the power play with assists from #34 Jordan Buesa and #23 Jonathan Yantsis, bringing the Sharks back within one. The equaliser came at 41:30 when Jonathan Yantsis scored his second of the night on another power play, assisted by #9 Dylan Stewart and Jordan Buesa.
The remainder of the third period became increasingly physical, with several penalties issued to both sides for roughing and other infractions, but neither team could find a winner before the end of regulation.
Overtime did not last long. Just six seconds into the extra period at 60:06, #96 CJ Garcia scored the decisive goal for the Steeldogs, assisted by #5 Brady Doxey, sealing a dramatic overtime victory for Sheffield after an intense and closely contested matchup.
