David Phillips brings a level of experience to the Sheffield Steeldogs blue line that few players in British hockey can match.

Born in Hull, Phillips came through the Kingston junior system before breaking into senior hockey with his hometown Hull Stingrays. Still a teenager when he established himself at senior level, his performances quickly marked him out as one of the country’s leading young defencemen and earned him his first Great Britain senior call-up in 2006.

His career has subsequently taken him across the world. In addition to a long and distinguished career in the Elite League, Phillips has played professionally in Australia, Denmark, Hungary and Sweden. Back in Britain, he has represented Coventry Blaze, Belfast Giants, Manchester Storm and Sheffield Steelers, spending seven seasons with the Steelers across two spells.

Making his senior Great Britain debut as a teenager in 2006, Phillips went on to represent his country for 18 years. He became only the sixth men’s player to reach 100 senior GB caps in 2023 and eventually retired from international hockey with 114 appearances.

Now back for the 2026/27 season, Phillips continues to provide a hugely experienced presence on the Steeldogs blue line. A 6’3″ right-shot defenceman, his game has been built on defensive awareness, strength and an ability to read situations before they develop.

With experience stretching from the NIHL to the AHL and the very highest level of international hockey, ‘Davey’ brings knowledge and leadership to the Steeldogs dressing room that very few players at this level can replicate.
