The Sheffield Steeldogs are delighted to confirm that veteran defenceman Ben Morgan has re-signed with the club for the 2026/27 NIHL National season.
The upcoming campaign will mark Morgs’ 15th season with the Steeldogs, a remarkable achievement that underlines his loyalty, commitment and enduring contribution to the club.
Since first pulling on a Steeldogs jersey, Morgs has been a constant presence on the blue line, earning the respect of teammates, coaches and supporters alike. His experience, leadership and passion for the club continue to make him an invaluable part of the organisation both on and off the ice.
Last season tested Morgs more than most. A serious ankle injury sustained during the summer of 2025 delayed the start of his campaign until late November, and just as he was finding his rhythm, another setback at the end of January kept him out of the line-up for a further month.
While the injuries were frustrating, Morgs’ attitude never changed. His professionalism, leadership and determination to return to action were evident throughout the season, earning the admiration of teammates and supporters alike. His commitment to the Steeldogs badge remained as strong as ever, and his eventual return was a reflection of the resilience that has made him such an important figure within the club.

Steeldogs General Manager Jamie McIlroy said:
“Having Morgs back for another season is fantastic news for our club, which I’m certain our supporters will agree with. After the injury he sustained at the end of the 2024/25 season, we certainly didn’t expect to have him back as quickly as we did last year. The fact that he returned ahead of schedule is quite simply a testament to his dedication, professionalism and the work he put into his rehabilitation. He approaches everything he does with incredible commitment, and that mindset is a huge part of what makes him such an important member of our organisation.
As a former player-coach on more than one occasion, he understands exactly what this club means to the city, our supporters and everyone associated with the Steeldogs. He has lived and breathed this organisation for years and takes enormous pride in representing Sheffield every time he pulls on the jersey.
On the ice, Morgs is the definition of a warrior. He blocks shots, plays physically, leads from the front and will do absolutely everything in his power to help the team win hockey games. Those qualities are impossible to measure, but they are invaluable to any successful team. What makes his achievements even more remarkable is that he already holds the franchise records for appearances, assists and points. Those records speak volumes about the consistency, longevity and standard he has maintained throughout his career.
Just as importantly, Morgs is an outstanding role model for the younger players in our dressing room and throughout our academy pathway. His attitude, work ethic and dedication to the team set the standard for everyone around him. When you have players coming through the system, there is no better example of what it means to be a Sheffield Steeldog.”
Quite simply, what Ben brings to this club both on and off the ice is irreplaceable, and we’re delighted to have him back for another season.”
