The Sheffield Steeldogs are delighted to announce that veteran forward Jonathan Phillips has re-signed with the club for the 2026/27 NIHL National season.
One of the most respected figures in British ice hockey, Phillips returns for another year in orange after continuing to play a pivotal role both on and off the ice. Since joining the Steeldogs in 2023, he has become an integral part of the club’s culture, helping guide the next generation of players while continuing to contribute at a high level on game nights.
A former Sheffield Steelers and GB captain. Phillips brings a wealth of experience that few players in the sport can match. His leadership, professionalism and commitment to the development of young talent have made him an invaluable member of the Steeldogs organisation.

Steeldogs General Manager Jamie McIlroy said:
“To be able to welcome Jono back for another season is fantastic news for our organisation. His achievements within the game speak for themselves. He has enjoyed a career that very few British players can match, captaining both Sheffield and Great Britain, winning championships throughout his career and earning the respect of teammates, coaches and opponents wherever he has played. However, what makes Jono so valuable to us today isn’t simply what he has achieved in the past, it’s what he continues to bring to our team every single day.
His experience, professionalism and understanding of the game are second to none. He has seen and experienced virtually every situation hockey can throw at you, and that knowledge is something that cannot be taught. Whether it’s on the bench during a difficult moment in a game, in practice helping younger players develop, or in the dressing room setting standards and expectations, his influence is felt throughout the organisation.
Jono remains an incredibly intelligent hockey player. His ability to read the game, make those around him better and contribute in key situations, continues to be a huge asset for us. Whilst everyone naturally looks at goals and assists, there is so much more to his game than what appears on a scoresheet. He understands what it takes to win, he understands what it takes to be a professional, and he brings those qualities into our environment every single day.
For our younger players, there are very few better role models in British hockey. The opportunity to learn from somebody who has represented his country over a long period, captained teams to success and maintained such high standards throughout his career is invaluable. The impact he has on the development of players within our group is something that should never be underestimated. As a club, we are building a culture based around hard work, professionalism and accountability, and Jono embodies all those qualities. He remains an important part of our leadership group and somebody that the whole team have immense respect for.
We’re delighted to have him back in orange for another season and we’re looking forward to seeing the impact he’ll continue to have both on and off the ice throughout the year ahead.”
