British hockey legend Jonathan Phillips returns to the Sheffield Steeldogs for the 2025–26 season, continuing an extraordinary career that has spanned over two decades at the top of the game.
Born in Cardiff and a product of the Devils’ junior system, Phillips became a household name during his 17-season run with the Sheffield Steelers, where he captained the side from 2007 until his retirement from the EIHL. A six-time EIHL champion and long-time captain of Great Britain, he is the most-capped player in GB history and widely respected as one of the finest leaders British hockey has produced.
Since joining the Steeldogs in 2023, Phillips has brought elite professionalism, leadership, and offensive production to the NIHL—posting back-to-back 50+ point seasons, including 54 points (17 goals, 37 assists) in 2024–25.
Now 42, Phillips shows no signs of slowing down and remains a crucial part of the Steeldogs’ leadership group both on and off the ice.
Head Coach Slava Koulikov said:
“Jonathan’s legacy speaks for itself—he’s a winner, a leader, and still a high-impact player. Having someone with his experience in our room is invaluable, especially for the younger guys. He’s shown he can still produce at a high level, and we’re thrilled to have him back again this year.”
