The Sheffield Steeldogs were narrowly beaten in overtime after an intense and physical battle with the Swindon Wildcats.
The visitors made the perfect start, taking the lead just 21 seconds into the game through Aaron Nell, assisted by Logan vande Meerakker and Caden Villegas. The early goal forced Sheffield to settle quickly, with both sides trading chances in a competitive opening period.
Discipline played a part throughout the night, and the Steeldogs made their opportunity count in the second period. After Sam Bullas was penalised for hooking, Bair Gendunov levelled the score at 36:02 with a well taken power play goal, assisted by Joonas Larinmaa and Cole Shudra, sending the home crowd into the second intermission with momentum building.
The third period brought even more drama. Following penalties on both sides, Sheffield grabbed what looked to be a crucial lead at 53:08 when Ivan Björkly Nordström fired home from Jonathan Kirk and Shudra to put the Steeldogs in front. The advantage was short lived, however, as Swindon responded just 38 seconds later through Logan vande Meerakker to tie the game once more.
Swindon called a late timeout as tensions rose in the closing minutes, but neither side could find a winner in regulation.
With the scores locked, overtime was needed to separate the teams. Despite a determined effort from the Steeldogs, it was Swindon who struck the decisive blow at 61:56, as Chris Jones found the net to bring the contest to an end in the extra frame.
