Steeldogs take one point from their Saturday night game vs Romford Raiders.

The Sheffield Steeldogs were forced to settle for a point after suffering a heartbreaking 2–1 overtime defeat to the Romford Raiders at Ice Sheffield on Saturday night. Dante Salituro gave Sheffield an early lead, but Romford’s Tjay Anderson struck twice, including the decisive goal in overtime, to snatch victory for the visitors.

In a closely fought contest, both goaltenders produced impressive performances, with the Raiders eventually prevailing despite Sheffield registering 35 shots on goal.

Early goals set the tone

Sheffield made the perfect start when Dante Salituro opened the scoring at 7:22 of the first period. The forward finished a move involving Walker Sommer and Michael Pelech to give the Steeldogs a 1–0 advantage.

The goal came on the power play following a hooking penalty against Romford’s Dawson Osborn at 6:20, allowing Sheffield to capitalise on their numerical advantage.

However, the lead lasted just 85 seconds. At 8:47, Romford’s Tjay Anderson equalised, converting chances created by Leo Bacallao and Andrew Coxhead.

The opening period finished level at 1–1, with Romford holding a 15–10 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams had shown attacking intent, but neither could establish control of the contest.

Defences take centre stage

The second period saw both sides work hard to find a breakthrough, but the goaltenders stood firm. Sheffield recorded 14 shots during the period, compared with 12 from Romford, yet neither side could add to the scoreboard.

Penalties continued to interrupt the flow of the game, with both teams needing to manage their discipline. Sheffield’s Michael Danečko was penalised for delay of game at 29:53, while Romford had already been assessed minors for hooking, boarding and high sticking.

The Steeldogs continued to generate opportunities, but the Raiders remained organised defensively and ensured the game stayed tied heading into the third period.

Third period tension

The final regulation period remained goalless as the teams battled for the winning goal. Sheffield registered nine shots on target, while Romford managed 18, putting the home side under sustained pressure.

Sheffield goaltender Shane Owen was particularly busy as the Raiders pushed forward in search of a decisive goal. Despite Romford’s greater shot volume, the Steeldogs held firm to force overtime with the score still 1–1.

The third period also saw Salituro sent to the penalty box for hooking at 50:32, adding to the pressure on the home side as the contest approached its conclusion.

Anderson delivers the overtime winner

With neither team able to find a breakthrough in regulation, the game went into sudden-death overtime.

The decisive moment arrived at 63:02, when Tjay Anderson scored his second goal of the night to secure the 2–1 victory for Romford. Jarrett Baker and Barret Kirwin provided the assists on the winning goal.

It was a cruel conclusion for Sheffield after a determined defensive effort and a strong performance from Owen. Romford’s ability to keep generating chances ultimately paid off, as Anderson delivered the decisive finish to take the extra point for the visitors.
