Steeldogs Secure Elite Goaltending Talent In Shane Owen

The Sheffield Steeldogs are delighted to announce the signing of experienced Canadian goaltender Shane Owen ahead of the 2026/27 NIHL National season.

Owen arrives in Sheffield boasting an extensive professional career spanning North America and Europe, including a decade of experience in British ice hockey. Since making the move to the UK in 2016, the Canadian has suited up for the Fife Flyers, Coventry Blaze and Belfast Giants, becoming one of the most experienced netminders to grace the British game in recent years.

Much of that journey was spent in Kirkcaldy, where Owen enjoyed a total of seven seasons across two spells with the Fife Flyers. During his time with the Scottish club, he became a fan favourite thanks to his battling performances, leadership qualities and unwavering commitment, cementing his place as one of the most influential players in the organisation’s modern era.

Steeldogs General Manager Jamie McIlroy said:

“When we started our search for a goaltender this summer, we weren’t looking for somebody to simply fill a position. We wanted somebody who could become a cornerstone of our team, somebody the players in front of could trust and somebody capable of influencing games when the margins are tight. Shane was the standout candidate from the very beginning.

Over the course of his career, he’s built a reputation as a goalie who embraces responsibility. Some players are at their best when everything is going their way. Shane is at his best when the game is on the line. He relishes being relied upon and that’s a quality that can’t be taught.

One of the things that has impressed me most when watching Shane over the years is his ability to stay composed regardless of what’s happening around him. Whether he’s facing twenty shots or fifty, whether his team is protecting a lead or chasing a game, his approach never seems to change. He gives his team a chance to win because he remains calm in situations where others can become rushed or emotional.

He’s also the type of player who can change the momentum of a game. Every successful team needs players capable of producing big moments, and for a goaltender that often means producing a save at exactly the right time. Shane has made a career out of doing that. There are very few goalies available who have repeatedly demonstrated the ability to come up with those key saves in pressure situations.

What excites me most is that despite everything he’s achieved, he still has the same hunger and competitive edge that helped him build his career in the first place. He isn’t coming to Sheffield for an easy ride. He wants to compete, he wants to win and he wants to help drive this organisation forward.

I think our supporters will quickly appreciate what he brings. He’s a fierce competitor, he’s passionate about the game and he takes enormous pride in his performances. Those are qualities that fit perfectly with what we’re trying to build here. We’re delighted to welcome Shane to Sheffield and we’re excited to see him backstopping the Steeldogs this season.”
