The DSM Sheffield Steeldogs came out victorious in the penalty shootout, defeating the Swindon Wildcats to secure their first points of the season.
The opening period was a closely contested affair, with both teams looking to find their way into the game. Neither side could break the deadlock, leaving the score tied at 0–0 after the opening 20 minutes.
It took just over 15 minutes of the second period for the deadlock to finally be broken. Nathan Salem found the back of the net on the powerplay to put the Steeldogs ahead heading into the second intermission.
Swindon responded early in the third period, with Canadian Sean Richards finding the equaliser.
The Steeldogs were then forced into a huge penalty kill late in the period, as Jordan O’Brien picked up a 2+2 for high sticking at 57:07. Sheffield successfully killed the full four minutes, seeing out the remainder of the third period and the opening stages of overtime to keep the game level.
Neither side could find a winner during overtime, meaning the game headed to a penalty shootout.
Both teams were given three attempts each, but neither could find the back of the net, sending the game into sudden death.
The Steeldogs went first, with CJ Garcia stepping up and ripping the puck past Marr to give Sheffield the advantage.
Sean Richards then stepped up for Swindon, but Shane Owen stood tall to make the save and secure the Steeldogs their first points of the season.
Owen was deservedly named Man of the Match for the second time in two weeks after another impressive performance between the pipes.
