It was the last home game of the regular season. With both teams already qualified for the play off groups , this game was basically a dead rubber. The aim of Sheffield this evening was no more injuries, definitely no player bans and definitely to stop Bricknell of Swindon scoring. Sheffield started without Walker Sommer and Ben Morgan who dropped to the bench. Tate Shudra and Ben Norton both injured. Warburton started in goal with Crow as backup.
The first was a pretty even affair with Swindon finally getting themselves in front with a power play goal at 17-10 and that’s how the first period ended with Swindon leading 1-0.
The second period was probably the craziest period of hockey we’ve seen in a long time. Sheffield set off at a pace at the beginning of the second and scored 3 goals in just over 3 minutes to completely turn the game on its head. Swindon called a time out to regroup themselves which seemed to have the desired effect. A short handed goal from Swindon reduced the Dog’s lead to 1. Swindon drew level with a goal from Bricknell, which also drew him level for league’s top goal scorer with Walker Sommer. 2 further goals in the period saw Swindon dominate over a very short benched Sheffield team, to lead the second period by 5-3.
Swindon were to totally dominate in the third adding a further 3 goals, an unmarked Bricknell got the third of those goals to take him to the top of the goals scored leader board. Hallfor’s picked a consolation goal up for Sheffield making the final score 8-4 in Swindon’s favour.
The season is over and in the books. Sheffield reached the semifinals of the cup and finished sixth in the league. Next weekend starts the push for Coventry with the away and home games against Swindon.
The next home game is on Sunday the 23rd March, with a 4pm face off. As its Mothering Sunday why not treat your mother to a meal out followed by tickets to a game of hockey.
