The Sheffield Steeldogs are pleased to announce that veteran defenceman Davey Phillips has put pen to paper for another season with the Steeldogs.
A Sheffield native and one of the most respected figures in British hockey, Phillips brings an unrivalled wealth of experience to the Steeldogs as the club continues to build towards the new campaign.
Having represented Great Britain on the international stage and spent the majority of his career competing at the highest level of UK hockey, Phillips’ influence extends far beyond the scoresheet. His leadership, professionalism, and commitment to the Sheffield hockey community make him an invaluable part of the organisation.
Returning for another season, Phillips provides stability on the blue line while also serving as a mentor to the next generation of Steeldogs talent. His ability to read the game, shut down opposition attacks, and lead by example has made him a cornerstone of the team’s defensive unit.
For supporters, his return is about more than just adding experience to the roster. It’s about keeping a Sheffield hockey icon in Sheffield colours.

Davey has known Slava for a number of years, so he understands exactly how we want to play. That familiarity is a real benefit to us. He’s a key part of our defensive group, plays big minutes and brings a calm, consistent presence whenever he’s on the ice. Having someone you know you can rely on in those moments makes a real difference over the course of a season.
As we continue to bring younger players into the squad, having someone with Davey’s experience alongside them is important. He’s always willing to help, share what he’s learned throughout his career and support the younger players as they develop. Those conversations in training, on the bench and in the dressing room are invaluable, and that’s something that doesn’t always get recognised from the outside.
Bringing Davey back was a straightforward decision.
