STEELDOGS LAND FORMER NHL DRAFT PICK MICHAEL PELECH IN MAJOR STATEMENT SIGNING

The Sheffield Steeldogs are proud to announce the signing of Canadian forward Michael Pelech ahead of the 2026/27 NIHL National season, in what represents one of the most ambitious and significant signings made by the organisation in recent years.

A former NHL Draft Pick, Pelech arrives in Sheffield with an elite professional résumé built across North America and Europe. Drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, the Ontario-born forward has gone on to enjoy a lengthy and highly respected professional career competing at an exceptional level.

Pelech brings extensive experience from both the AHL and ECHL, having played 35 games in the AHL, and 884 games in the ECHL, whilst competing alongside and against elite-level talent on a nightly basis. Throughout his North American career, he established himself as a consistent offensive contributor, whilst also earning a reputation for his physicality, leadership, professionalism and high hockey IQ.

Following his success in North America, Pelech continued his career in Europe with the Glasgow Clan, and most recently, with the Coventry Blaze in the EIHL, along with time in the Erste Liga with UTE. His experience at those levels brings a calibre of player and leader rarely seen within the NIHL National division.

General Manager Jamie McIlroy believes the appointment reflects the next step in the continued evolution of the organisation.

“This is a genuine marquee signing for the Sheffield Steeldogs and one that reflects the direction we are continuing to move in as an organisation.

When we conducted our full review following the season, we identified specific areas within our group that we felt needed strengthening if we wanted to continue progressing and competing at the very top end of the league.

We felt we needed to add more high-level experience, more physical presence, more leadership, and a player who could dictate games in difficult moments. We wanted somebody who could play with an edge, protect the puck well, and compete hard in traffic areas.

Michael fits every one of those characteristics.

Throughout his career, he has built a reputation as a powerful, intelligent forward with excellent puck protection, strong offensive instincts, and the ability to impact games physically as well as offensively. Those are qualities that we felt were missing at times within our group last season.

His background speaks for itself. You do not become an NHL Draft Pick, gain AHL experience, and play nearly 900 games in the ECHL and then establish the kind of professional career he has had in Europe without possessing elite-level ability, professionalism and leadership.

We are building a team and culture based around accountability, professionalism, competitiveness, and people fully buying into what we are trying to achieve here in Sheffield. Michael embodies those qualities completely.

This signing raises the standard of our organisation immediately, both on and off the ice, and I have absolutely no doubt that our supporters are going to be excited to see somebody of his calibre wearing orange this season.”

Pelech’s arrival adds elite-level pedigree, proven professionalism and significant experience to what is rapidly shaping up to be one of the strongest Steeldogs rosters assembled in recent years.

Welcome to Sheffield, Michael. 🧡
