Earlier this month, the Sheffield Steeldogs announced the signing of veteran forward Michael Pelech for the 2026/27 season, a player whose hockey journey has taken him across multiple countries, leagues, and dressing rooms alongside some of the sport’s biggest names.
Hockey runs strongly throughout the Pelech family. Alongside his younger brother Adam, who currently plays for the New York Islanders in the NHL, Michael’s older brother Matt Pelech also enjoyed a professional career before retiring in 2020 following a spell with the Belfast Giants.
Selected in the sixth round, 156th overall, by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2009 NHL Draft, Pelech has built a career defined by experience, resilience, and a deep understanding of the game. While his path may not have followed the traditional NHL route, few players arriving in the NIHL can match the breadth of hockey experiences he brings to Sheffield.
According to Elite Prospects, Pelech’s career began back in 2003 with the Toronto Marlboros U15 AAA programme, a team packed with future NHL talent. Among his teammates were current Columbus Blue Jackets defenceman Brendan Smith, Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares.

The talent around those Marlboros teams was remarkable, and Pelech was right in the middle of it.
His progression continued during the 2005/06 season when he represented Team Ontario at the Canada U17 level. Once again, he found himself sharing the ice with names that would go on to become household stars in the NHL, including, Tavares, Couture, and Smith.
Over the years, Pelech’s career has taken him around the world, gaining experience in different leagues, cultures, and styles of hockey. That veteran presence is exactly what the Steeldogs will hope can strengthen the squad heading into the new campaign.

In 2021, Pelech joined the Atlanta Gladiators where he spent two exciting seasons in the ECHL. During the 2021/22 campaign he recorded 36 points before producing an even stronger 2022/23 season, tallying an impressive 75 points in 71 games for the Gladiators.
Following the 2022/23 season, Pelech made the move overseas for the first time in his professional career, joining the Glasgow Clan in Scotland. He quickly made an impact in the EIHL before spending part of the 2024/25 season with the Clan and later making the move to Hungary to play for UTE, where he finished the campaign.
Last season saw Pelech return to the UK with the Coventry Blaze, helping the side reach the Challenge Cup Final. Despite a strong run to the final, the Blaze narrowly missed out on silverware after defeat to the Nottingham Panthers.
Just a few weeks ago, the Sheffield Steeldogs announced the signing of Pelech in a move that quickly turned heads around the league and drew attention to what is being built in Sheffield ahead of the new season.

For Sheffield fans, the arrival of a player with NHL draft pedigree and such a unique hockey résumé is certainly one to keep an eye on this season.
