The Sheffield Steeldogs are delighted to announce the return of defenceman Jonathan Kirk for the upcoming season, with the experienced blue-liner set to begin his eighth campaign in Steeldogs colours.
A familiar face to Steeldogs fans, Kirk will enter his eighth season with the club and his sixth consecutive campaign since returning ahead of the 2021/22 season.
An experienced leader both on and off the ice, JK has been a huge asset to the organisation since rejoining the Steeldogs, playing a key role in the team’s success over recent years. He has also captained the side for the last three seasons, leading by example and becoming an integral part of the club both on and off the ice.
Kirk’s first spell in orange dates back to the 2011/12 season in the old English Premier Ice Hockey League.

Steeldogs General Manager Jamie McIlroy said:
“JK’s return was extremely important to us this summer.
There is always a lot of focus on bringing new players into an organisation, but retaining your best players is just as important, and JK was somebody we were determined to keep in Sheffield.
In my opinion, he remains one of the best British defencemen in the National League. Every coach wants players they can trust in key moments, and JK is one of those players. Whether it’s defending a one-goal lead, matching up against the opposition’s top line, or playing heavy minutes in important games, he’s somebody we know can be relied upon time-and-time again.
British defencemen who can consistently play top-four minutes at this level are incredibly difficult to find, which is exactly why securing JK’s return was such a priority for us. When you’re building a roster capable of challenging at the top end of this league, players like JK are the foundation that everything else is built upon.
What makes his return even more valuable is where our roster is heading. We’ve got some exciting young talent coming into the organisation, and there is huge value in having those players share a dressing room with somebody who has played the game at a consistently high level for as long as JK has. Young players don’t just learn from coaches; they learn from the people around them every day, and there are very few better examples for them to follow. He turns up, works hard, competes, and sets a standard that others naturally follow. Those qualities are a big reason why he has been such an important part of this organisation for so many years.
I know how highly our supporters think of JK, and rightly so. Players who represent this club with the level of commitment and professionalism that he has shown don’t come around very often. We’re delighted to have him back, and I have no doubt he’ll continue to be a major player for us as we look to take another step forward this season.”
