This Sunday, the DSM Sheffield Steeldogs will honour one of the club’s true legends as we retire #42 Tim Smith to the rafters.
Tim’s dedication and commitment to the Steeldogs over the years has been nothing short of incredible. From coming through the Sheffield junior system to becoming a key part of the senior team, Tim has enjoyed a remarkable career from start to finish.
And fittingly, Tim’s playing career ended with one final piece of silverware, as the Steeldogs lifted the National Cup Championship in March this year.
Where Did It All Start?
Tim’s hockey journey began right here in Sheffield, coming through the Academy and progressing through the junior ranks before making the step up to senior hockey in England.
His first senior appearance came with the Peterborough Islanders in the ENL. During the same season, Tim progressed to the Peterborough Phantoms in the EPIHL.
In 2007, Tim moved on from Peterborough and joined the Invicta Dynamos, where he would spend the next five years.
During his fifth season with Invicta, Tim returned to Sheffield ice, joining the Steeldogs for the remainder of the 2011/12 season.
Tim would return to the Invicta Dynamos for one final season in 2012/13 before making the move back home to Sheffield permanently in 2013.
That would begin the next chapter of an incredible career.
11 Years in Sheffield
From 2013 onwards, Tim spent the next 11 years representing his hometown club, becoming a huge part of the Steeldogs both on and off the ice.
Year after year, Tim showed the dedication, professionalism and commitment that has made him such an important figure within the club.
At the end of last season, Tim made the decision to finally hang up his skates and step away from playing.
But his time at the rink was far from over.
Tim continues to play an important role within the Sheffield Academy, coaching at the rink as he has done for the past couple of years and helping the next generation of players develop.
Tim Smith Career Highlights
Tim has enjoyed plenty of success throughout his career, winning his first NIHL 1 and NIHL 1 South Championships in 2008/09, followed by another NIHL 1 South Championship in 2009/10.
He went on to win the NIHL 1 North Championship in 2017/18, the NIHL Cup in 2020/21 and the NIHL Playoff Championship in 2021/22.
His final piece of silverware came in 2025/26, when Tim lifted the NIHL Cup with the Sheffield Steeldogs.
A Lasting Legacy
From a young player coming through the Sheffield Academy to becoming a Steeldogs legend, Tim Smith’s journey has come full circle.
His final season as a player couldn’t have had a better ending, lifting the National Cup with the club he had given so much of his career to.
Now, on Sunday, we get the chance to celebrate Tim, his career and everything he has given to the Sheffield Steeldogs Ice Hockey Club.
#42 will be retired to the rafters.
